The Senate passed the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Local Government (Amendment) Bill, 2024, on Wednesday, despite strong opposition claims that the bill’s expedited passage was a tactic to delay upcoming local elections in the capital, PressTonight reported.
Opposition Leader Syed Shibli Faraz criticized the government’s decision to rush the bill through the Senate without a thorough review by a House committee. He questioned whether the Senate was being reduced to a rubber stamp, especially since the bill had already cleared the other House.
In response, Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani urged the government to present legislation earlier to allow for proper committee scrutiny. Following this, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar moved the bill for consideration, and it was passed after a clause-by-clause reading.
