Pakistani health authorities have turned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for advice on issuing an Mpox advisory, particularly for travellers heading to countries from which recent cases of the virus have been detected in Pakistan, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
“We’ve approached the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for guidance on how to effectively issue an Mpox advisory, especially since four of our confirmed cases have come from two Arab nations with close ties to Pakistan. Three patients recently arrived from one Arab state, while the fourth came from another where local Mpox transmission is still ongoing,” stated Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed Bharath, National Coordinator for Health.
Given the sensitivity surrounding these “brotherly nations,” Dr. Bharath emphasized the need for diplomatic discretion. “We are seeking advice on how best to inform and educate Pakistani citizens travelling to these countries, as well as other high-risk regions, without creating undue alarm,” he added.
The health authorities aim to balance public safety with diplomatic considerations, ensuring travellers are well-informed about the risks while maintaining positive relations with the countries involved.
