Pakistan Reports Fourth Polio Case of 2024

Islamabad: Pakistan reported its fourth poliovirus case of the year, citing sources from the Ministry of National Health.

The latest case involves a 2-year-old boy from the Bharkan union council in Sindh’s Shikarpur district. Health officials confirmed the presence of the virus in stool samples collected from the child, who began showing symptoms of paralysis on May 21.

This recent case adds to the three previous cases reported in 2024, all of which were from Balochistan. Pakistan, along with Afghanistan, remains one of the only two countries where the poliovirus is still endemic.

In 2023, Pakistan recorded six polio cases, with four cases in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province and two in the southern port city of Karachi.
