The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) issued an early warning on Tuesday about a developing low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea, which could escalate into a tropical storm.
According to the NDMA, the system is currently located near the Lakshadweep Valley in India and is anticipated to move northwestward, potentially making landfall along Pakistan’s coastal areas in the third week of October 2024.
“Early forecasts suggest the possibility of landfall along the Pakistani coastline in the third week of October 2024, depending on its trajectory and intensity,” the disaster management authority stated.
The evolving system has the potential to become a full-fledged tropical cyclone, posing a significant threat to coastal regions. The NDMA has urged citizens and stakeholders, especially those in coastal areas, to stay updated with official advisories and weather forecasts.
In addition, the NDMA is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with relevant departments and will issue further alerts as the storm’s development progresses.
It is worth noting that Karachi and other coastal areas recently experienced intermittent rains under the influence of Cyclone Asna, which developed in the Arabian Sea at the end of August 2024.
