The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has issued a forecast of medium flood levels in River Chenab, with medium to high-level flows anticipated in the nullahs within the catchments of Rivers Ravi and Chenab over the next 24 hours.
According to the FFC’s daily report on Sunday, the Indus River is currently experiencing a “Medium Flood” in the Taunsa-Guddu section and “Low Flood” conditions in the Tarbela-Kalabagh section and at the Sukkur Barrage. Meanwhile, River Kabul remains in “Low Flood” at Nowshera, while the other major rivers in the Indus River System—Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej—are maintaining normal flow levels.
The report also noted that the Combined Live Storage of Pakistan’s major reservoirs (Tarbela, Mangla, and Chashma) is currently at 10.353 million acre-feet (MAF), which is 77.53% of the total live storage capacity of 13.354 MAF.
The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) in Lahore reported that the previous day’s trough of Westerly Wave over northern Afghanistan has moved over northern Pakistan, and an upper air cyclonic circulation over central Jharkhand, India, has shifted to southern Uttar Pradesh, India. An active monsoon trough is extending from the Bay of Bengal to Northeastern Punjab, with moderate to strong moist currents penetrating the upper parts of Pakistan from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal up to 5,000 feet. A seasonal low persists over northeast Balochistan.
The FFD has predicted scattered to widespread thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rain, including isolated very heavy falls, over the upper catchments of all major rivers and Islamabad in the next 24 hours. Additionally, scattered thunderstorms with moderate intensity and isolated heavy falls are expected in various divisions of Punjab (Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Bahawalpur, and D.G. Khan), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, and D.I. Khan), and isolated areas of Balochistan (Zhob, Sibbi, Nasirabad, and Kalat).
