Karachi Braces for High ‘Feels Like’ Temperatures Due to Elevated Humidity
KARACHI: Dr. Sardar Sarfaraz, Chief Meteorologist at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), has warned that the ‘feels like’ temperature in Karachi’s sea-facing areas may rise to 44 degrees Celsius on Friday due to high atmospheric humidity. The city is expected to experience hot and humid weather until the end of May, with humidity levels remaining elevated because of persistent sea breezes.
Humidity levels in Karachi were recorded at 78% this morning and are expected to fluctuate between 35% and 45% in the evening. The temperature today and tomorrow (Saturday) is anticipated to range between 36°C to 38°C, with a slight decrease of 1°C to 2°C beginning tomorrow.
The PMD has advised the public to minimize direct sunlight exposure and use water judiciously. Additionally, a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is expected to cause heatwave conditions across most parts of Pakistan, particularly in Punjab and Sindh, starting May 21. These conditions are projected to intensify into a severe heatwave from May 23 to 27, with temperatures in Sindh and Punjab expected to rise 4°C to 6°C above normal from May 21 to 23 and 6°C to 8°C higher from May 23 to 27.
The Met Office also cautioned that the extreme heat and dry conditions could lead to bush and forest fires in vulnerable areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Northeast Balochistan.
