Residents of Karachi are set to experience a sharp increase in their electricity bills in October and November 2024. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved K-Electric’s request for a hike in fuel charges, leading to an additional charge of Rs2.5934 per unit in October and Rs3.1688 per unit in November.
This increase results from adjustments in monthly fuel charges for May and June 2024, bringing the total impact to Rs5.763 per unit. This adjustment will impose an extra burden of nearly Rs10.6 billion on consumers. With the inclusion of GST, the total cost could rise to approximately Rs12.5 billion.
The decision was made following a public hearing held on July 30, 2024, where Nepra reviewed K-Electric’s petition, which initially sought a Rs5.45 per unit increase. Despite this, Nepra approved an even higher adjustment.
