Government to Route 50% of Public-Sector Imports Through Gwadar, Says Maritime Minister

Federal Maritime Minister Qaisar Ahmed Sheikh announced that the government intends to direct 50% of public-sector import cargo through Gwadar Port. During a visit to the Karachi Press Club (KPC), Sheikh highlighted the government’s and his ministry’s ongoing efforts to attract investment, particularly in the maritime sector, which he sees as offering significant potential for international investors.

Sheikh explained that the decision to shift a large portion of public-sector imports to Gwadar is aimed at enhancing the port’s operations and generating employment opportunities for the local community.

He also revealed that a major investment from the European shipping giant Maersk is on the horizon, with an expected contribution of $2 billion to Pakistan’s shipping sector. While a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has already been signed, Sheikh noted that the final investment amount is yet to be confirmed.
