The Government of Pakistan has announced its intention to establish a commission aimed at digitizing the national economy as part of the Digital National Framework. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will lead the commission, which was revealed by Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima, during an event organized by Huawei Technologies at its headquarters in Islamabad to commemorate World Telecom Day.
The commission’s primary objective is to enact legislation conducive to national digitization, with a focus on leveraging automation to enhance transparency and infrastructure development in response to shifting paradigms.
Minister Fatima highlighted the imminent finalization of the Mobile Manufacturing and Exports Policy, intended to bolster the country’s exports, particularly in the mobile phone sector. Currently, mobile phone exports are recorded at approximately 0.2 million units, a figure deemed insufficient, necessitating a substantial increase.
Addressing the issue of digital inclusivity, Fatima emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring quality Internet and broadband access for all citizens. Initiatives such as the National Fiberisation Policy and the Smartphone for All Policy are underway to achieve this goal, along with efforts to provide telecom services in both urban and rural areas.
Furthermore, Minister Fatima underscored the government’s dedication to bridging the digital divide between rural and urban regions. This commitment is demonstrated through the allocation of projects worth Rs80 billion to expand internet access in underserved areas, facilitated by the Universal Service Fund.
During the event, a delegation from the Ministry, comprising Chief Coordinator Baber Sheikh and Coordinator Sania Zaidi, alongside Huawei management, were in attendance.
World Telecom Day, an annual celebration, serves to highlight the transformative potential of digital innovation in advancing sustainable development and prosperity. Minister Fatima commended Huawei’s efforts in building a fully connected, intelligent world, reiterating the Pakistani government’s support for the company in accelerating digitalization endeavors.
