ECP Sets September 29 for Local Government Elections in Islamabad

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that the local government elections in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) will be held on September 29. This decision comes after a prolonged delay, as the local government in Islamabad ceased to exist on February 15, 2021. Since then, various factors have prevented the electoral process from taking place.

The announcement marks a significant step toward restoring local governance in Islamabad. The local government had been inactive for over two years, creating a vacuum in administrative and civic responsibilities. The ECP’s move to schedule the elections reflects efforts to re-establish a functioning local government, which is crucial for addressing the needs and concerns of the residents of the capital.

The upcoming elections are expected to be closely watched, as they will determine the leadership and direction of local governance in Islamabad. The electoral process will allow citizens to elect representatives who will oversee local matters, including municipal services, infrastructure development, and community welfare.

This election is particularly important given the long gap since the last local government was dissolved, and it provides an opportunity for the residents of Islamabad to have a renewed voice in their local administration. The ECP’s decision to set a definitive date underscores its commitment to ensuring that local government functions are restored in the nation’s capital.
