US officials have conveyed to their Indian counterparts the need for a swift resolution and increased accountability regarding the investigation into India’s alleged involvement in a foiled murder plot targeting Sikh activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the United States.
An Indian Enquiry Committee visited Washington last week to engage in discussions about India’s own investigative efforts, following claims from the US Justice Department that an Indian intelligence official had orchestrated the assassination attempt against Pannun, a dual citizen of the US and Canada.
A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, “We’ve communicated really clearly that the US government isn’t going to feel fully satisfied until we see that meaningful accountability takes place.” The official emphasized the expectation for India to expedite its investigative process.
The Indian embassy in Washington has yet to respond to requests for comment. This communication from Washington marks the first public acknowledgment of the US’s position on the matter.
