Punjab to launch Tourist Train from Rawalpindi to Murree

In a significant move towards the development and beautification of Murree, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and PMLN President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif co-chaired a five-hour-long meeting where several key projects were approved. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb provided a detailed briefing on the comprehensive development, transport, construction, and rehabilitation plans.

Key decisions made during the meeting included:

  • Approval of the Murree Development Plan: This plan encompasses the overall development, beautification, and transport enhancements for Murree.
  • Tourist Glass Train Project: Approval was given for the Rawalpindi-Murree tourist glass train project. It was decided to hire an international consultant for its execution.
  • High-Rise Building Removal: A decision was made to remove high-rise hotel buildings that obstruct the natural scenery of Mall Road, Rawalpindi, and to relocate these hotels from GPO Chowk to an alternative location.
  • Uniform Appearance for Old Buildings: Implementation of a uniform appearance, including signs and color schemes, for the old buildings on Mall Road was ordered.
  • Restoration of Historical Names: The meeting agreed to restore the old names of cities, areas, and historical buildings, including Murree.
  • Amendments to Building Laws: Amendments to building laws for construction in Murree were approved, with the power of approval being transferred to the provincial government level.
  • Action Against Illegal Constructions: It was decided in principle to take action against officials who allowed illegal constructions.
