ISLAMABAD: On the occasion of World Maritime Day, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the need for a secure and efficient shipping environment while reaffirming the government’s dedication to safeguarding Pakistan’s maritime ecosystem.

Earlier in the month, UN maritime chief Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco visited Pakistan and attended an international maritime conference, where he acknowledged the country’s expanding role in the global maritime sector. He highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable shipping, along with ongoing efforts to enhance trade through sea routes and upgrade port infrastructure in Karachi and Gwadar. The country aims to become a crucial transit hub for landlocked Central Asian nations like Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.

World Maritime Day, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1978, annually underscores the significance of international shipping and maritime safety. In his message, President Zardari stressed the pivotal role of the maritime sector in global trade, contributing to economic growth, employment opportunities, and fostering international cooperation.

“The day emphasizes the need for a more secure and efficient shipping environment to ensure the uninterrupted flow of international maritime trade,” Zardari said.

He further reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to protect its maritime ecosystem and coastal regions, addressing major challenges such as marine pollution and the impacts of climate change. Pakistan is working to strengthen its regulatory framework to combat marine pollution, improve waste management in maritime areas, and support community-driven environmental projects.

As an active member of the IMO, Pakistan has signed various conventions aimed at ensuring the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships. The country has also collaborated with international organizations to mitigate environmental damage and protect its maritime ecosystem.
