On Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif constituted an eight-member task force to identify and oversee the implementation of structural reforms in the power sector. This task force is also tasked with recommending measures to reduce capacity payments, potentially including the shutdown of certain plants.
The formation of this task force aims to alleviate the financial burden on the power sector borne by the government and to facilitate the creation of an efficient, liquid, and self-sustaining competitive power market, according to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The role of the task force extends beyond fact-finding; it will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of its recommendations. The government will provide full support, including the necessary budget allocation, to ensure the task force can effectively carry out its mandate.
