Peshawar Reports Fourth Mpox Case, Raising Concerns Over Potential Outbreak

Pakistan’s efforts to combat mpox have intensified as Peshawar reported its fourth case on Sunday, sparking fears that the city might be emerging as a hotspot for the virus. The latest case involves a 47-year-old man who tested positive after being isolated by Border Health Services staff on August 29. The patient had recently returned from the Gulf region, heightening concerns about the virus being spread by travelers from the Middle East.

“This is the fifth mpox case reported in the country this year and the fourth since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a global health emergency,” stated Federal Director General of Health, Dr. Shabana Saleem. She expressed serious concerns about the virus’s re-emergence in Peshawar and the potential for its transmission, emphasizing the need for immediate action.

Dr. Saleem pointed out that all recent cases involved individuals with travel histories to the Gulf, suggesting that Peshawar could be becoming an epicenter for mpox cases. In response to the rising cases, authorities have enhanced screening measures at all airports, with stringent protocols now in place to prevent further spread of the virus.

“We are not taking any chances,” Dr. Saleem assured, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health. Federal and provincial health officials are closely coordinating to monitor the situation and ensure that all preventive measures are effectively implemented.

As concerns grow among health experts and the public, Dr. Saleem urged the public to remain vigilant, especially those returning from high-risk areas. “Public cooperation is crucial in preventing the spread of mpox,” she warned, stressing the importance of following health advisories to curb the virus before it gains a stronger foothold.
