Punjab Flood Warnings:
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab has issued flood warnings for various parts of the province, predicting the monsoon spell to last until August 14. Highlighting the flood situation in the Indus River and Nala Aik in Sialkot, the PDMA has urged local authorities to stay alert. The water levels in rivers, dams, and streams are rising, posing a risk of a lower to medium flood situation in the Indus River for the next few days. There is also a risk of flooding in streams connected to the Chenab and Ravi Rivers.
PDMA Chief Irfan Ali Kathia assured that preparations are complete to address the possible flood risks. “Citizens are advised to take precautionary measures during the rainy season,” he added.
Balochistan Safety Measures:
In Balochistan, authorities have imposed Section 144 to restrict tourist activities, prioritizing public safety. PDMA Balochistan is closely monitoring the rain situation and assessing crop damage to compensate affected farmers. “The PDMA is identifying and establishing safe places to accommodate people affected by the heavy downpour,” said Naveed Ahmad Sheikh, PDMA Chief of Balochistan.
The province has a history of severe flooding, such as the 2002 floods which caused widespread destruction of infrastructure, homes, and agricultural lands, displacing thousands and resulting in significant loss of life.
Climate Vulnerability:
Pakistan is among the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change. Last month, a United Nations official warned that around 200,000 people in the country could be affected by the ongoing monsoon season. Four years ago, unusually heavy rains triggered flash floods, killing over 1,700 people and causing estimated losses of over $30 billion.
The PDMA’s proactive measures and alerts aim to mitigate the risks and ensure public safety during the current monsoon season.
