In collaboration with 12 member countries of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program (GSLEP), Pakistan has accelerated efforts to recognize the snow leopard as an international symbol of climate adaptation at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
During a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Romina Khurshid Alam, Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change, laid out the steps for this initiative. The plan includes formal communications with the UNGA, snow leopard range countries, and key wildlife conservation organizations.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs will lead diplomatic efforts, coordinating with other snow leopard range states to present a strong case at the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November.
Romina Khurshid highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to wildlife conservation, stating, “The snow leopard is more than just a symbol of beauty—it’s a key indicator of climate change. As one of the nations most impacted by climate change, Pakistan is determined to raise awareness and contribute to global efforts.”
Ambassador for Wildlife, Sardar Jamal Ahmad Khan Leghari, praised Pakistan’s leadership in this cause, expressing optimism that the snow leopard will soon be recognized as a global symbol of climate resilience.
