KARACHI: Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz announced on Saturday that there is no chance of rain in Karachi today, though some areas might experience a drizzle. The city has been enduring a severe heatwave for the past few days, with temperatures soaring above 40°C and the “feels like” temperature exceeding 50°C. Prolonged loadshedding has compounded the discomfort for residents.

Sarfaraz mentioned that the weather is expected to stay partly cloudy today, and the soothing sea breeze will be blocked due to low air pressure in the Arabian Sea. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) advisory, the weather in Karachi will likely remain hot and humid over the next 24 hours. The minimum temperature recorded in the city is 30.5°C, and the maximum temperature is expected to range between 36 to 38°C. The Met Office noted that the humidity level is currently at 70%.

Karachi residents experienced some relief from the intense heat on Thursday when parts of the city received a brief rain spell. However, the coolness was short-lived as humidity quickly returned.

No Night-Time Loadshedding

Sindh Energy Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has instructed power utilities to avoid loadshedding between 10 PM and 6 AM. During a media briefing in the Sindh Assembly on Friday, Shah emphasized that Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco), Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco), and K-Electric were sternly warned against implementing loadshedding during these hours.

Shah disclosed that a recent meeting between K-Electric, Hesco, and Sepco had resulted in mandatory measures to curtail both daytime and night-time loadshedding. He stressed that any planned loadshedding must be communicated to the public well in advance.

“The Sindh government stands in solidarity with the people during their times of hardship; hence, we have mandated power distributors to cease loadshedding,” he declared. Addressing concerns about summer loadshedding, particularly during peak afternoon hours, he announced the formation of a committee aimed at combating electricity theft. He assured that the government would provide full support to institutions and undertake necessary emergency measures to alleviate the hardships faced by the people of Sindh.
