KARACHI: Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Zafar Javed and his son were among three individuals apprehended for their alleged involvement in a robbery at a pan shop in Karachi.

Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Arif Aslam informed the media that the suspects, including a senior police officer and his son, were arrested following a robbery at a pan shop in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area late Wednesday night.

A case was registered based on a complaint by the shop owner, Shahzeb, at the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Police Station. The police van used in the crime was also confiscated.

CCTV footage of the incident revealed that at least three men, two of whom had their faces covered with masks, exited a police van and stormed a pan shop. They threatened the shopkeeper before forcibly entering the shop to steal products and cash.

SSP Aslam confirmed that the police van used in the robbery belonged to DSP Zafar. He added that all suspects seen in the footage were being identified.

According to the police, the DSP’s son and his friends were implicated in the crime after an initial investigation. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices.

The crime rate in Karachi has surged, with at least 71 people shot dead by robbers in the first five months of 2024.

A report on Karachi crime in April noted that 6,780 street crime incidents occurred in one month, with 20 vehicles snatched and over 130 others stolen.

The report also highlighted that during Ramazan, 830 motorcycles were snatched, 4,200 others were stolen, and 1,600 mobile phones were taken.

In response to the sharp rise in street crimes, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed the police to enhance security and monitoring in Karachi to ensure the protection of people’s lives and properties.
