On Thursday, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is set to deliver the most significant speech of her political career as she accepts the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. This moment comes a month after the party pushed President Joe Biden to step aside from the race. Harris’s presidential aspirations have long been evident, though her previous 2020 campaign and vice presidency faced challenges. However, since becoming the Democratic nominee, Harris has gained momentum, tightening the race against Republican contender Donald Trump.
Harris has invigorated voters with her powerful stump speeches, sparking increased enthusiasm across the electorate. If victorious on November 5, she will make history as the first Black, South Asian woman to be elected president of the United States.
In her acceptance speech, Harris, 59, will reflect on her upbringing as the daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother. She plans to outline her strategies for addressing rising costs and safeguarding personal freedoms, including abortion rights, according to her aides. Additionally, she will deliver a strong rebuke of former President Trump, emphasizing the need for unity in America.
“There is a guy who wants to divide us, and she will make the case that we simply cannot let that happen, that this is America and everybody can rise together,” stated Cedric Richmond, Harris’s campaign co-chair and longtime adviser, in an interview with Reuters.
Harris gave delegates a glimpse of what’s to come on Monday, the first night of the convention, when she made a surprise appearance on stage to the sound of Beyoncé’s “Freedom.” “This November, we will come together and declare with one voice as one people: We are moving forward,” she asserted.
Whether Beyoncé will make an appearance on Thursday remains a topic of speculation, but the campaign has not commented on the possibility.
