LAHORE — In a significant late-night meeting on Wednesday at the Sharif family’s Jati Umra residence, major political figures—including the Sharif brothers, President Asif Ali Zardari, and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman—reached a consensus on judicial reforms.
The dinner, hosted by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, included prominent attendees such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. Following the discussions, Maulana Fazl announced a successful agreement on judicial reforms, with further consultations planned for additional proposals.
Bilawal highlighted that the PPP and JUI-F had already aligned their positions, and now the three parties are united in their approach. Ishaq Dar reiterated this sentiment, confirming the agreement on judicial reforms and indicating that consensus on other amendments is expected soon.
President Zardari called for sessions of the Senate and National Assembly for Thursday at 4 PM, signaling potential legislative action on the reforms. Although the agenda does not currently include the proposed Constitutional (Twenty-Sixth) Amendment Bill, it could be added as a supplementary item.
Political analysts have expressed concerns over the cancellation of a scheduled cabinet meeting, speculating it might affect the progress of the proposed amendments. The ruling coalition aims to pass these amendments swiftly, while the PTI has vowed to oppose them vigorously, planning district-level protests across the country.
As political maneuvers continue, the Special Committee of Parliament is expected to finalize the draft for the constitutional amendment, with the government aiming for it to first pass through the Senate before heading to the National Assembly.
In light of these developments, PTI has decided to limit its participation in parliamentary sessions, emphasizing their strategy to mobilize opposition against the government’s legislative efforts.
