ISLAMABAD: Turkmenistan is poised to become the first Central Asian nation to gain access to Pakistan’s strategically important Gwadar port, as part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), according to state-run media reports. The agreement between the two countries is expected to be signed soon, marking a significant step in regional cooperation.

Gwadar Port’s Role in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

Located at the core of CPEC, Gwadar port is a crucial element of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at connecting China to the Arabian Sea through Pakistan’s extensive network of infrastructure projects. These include roads, railways, and pipelines that are designed to modernize Pakistan’s economy and expand trade routes.

Upcoming Agreement Between Pakistan and Turkmenistan

As reported by Radio Pakistan, the Pakistani government has formed a committee to review the draft agreement between Gwadar Port and Turkmenbashi Port, further strengthening the collaboration between the two nations under CPEC.

Ongoing Joint Projects: TAPI Gas Pipeline and Beyond

Pakistan and Turkmenistan are already collaborating on several major projects, such as the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) gas pipeline, rail connectivity, and fiber-optic infrastructure. These projects aim to foster stronger ties between South and Central Asia, boosting trade and economic cooperation.

Strategic Benefits for Pakistan

For Pakistan, the partnership with Turkmenistan and access to Gwadar port enhances its role as a critical trade and transit hub, linking landlocked Central Asian countries to global markets. This strategic advantage is vital for Pakistan’s efforts to revitalize its economy and strengthen its geopolitical position.
