Federal Cabinet Approves 50% Increase in Imports via Gwadar Port

The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved a proposal on Thursday to increase the volume of imports through Gwadar port by 50%. The decision, recommended by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, mandates that 50% of imports such as wheat, sugar, and fertiliser be routed through the port.

To monitor this initiative, a subcommittee will be established to submit quarterly reports on imports and exports through Gwadar port to the cabinet.

The move aligns with the prime minister’s August directives to enhance Gwadar port’s operations, ensuring that 50% of all public sector cargo is transported via the port. Prime Minister Sharif emphasized that this decision is aimed at fostering the development and prosperity of Balochistan.

Federal Maritime Minister Qaisar Ahmed Sheikh earlier stated that routing public-sector imports through Gwadar will improve the port’s functionality and provide employment opportunities for the local community.
