The Balochistan government has received accolades from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Pakistan for designating Churna Island as the country’s second marine protected area (MPA). This significant decision was approved by the provincial cabinet during a meeting held on Wednesday.
Churna Island, located near Karachi, now joins Astola Island, which was declared the first MPA in Pakistan back in June 2017. Both islands are recognized as biodiversity hotspots, with coral habitats that are rare in the region. Despite its ecological importance, Churna Island is also a popular destination for recreational activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, cliff jumping, and jet skiing.
