Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced that the administration is fully engaged in addressing the rain emergency across the province. In Karachi, the Mayor remained on duty throughout the night to supervise drainage operations, with the Mayors of Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas also actively present in their respective areas. “Our MPs and MNAs are on the ground, and they will remain there as long as the situation demands,” he assured. The Chief Minister of Sindh is personally visiting the rain-affected regions, and the Irrigation Minister is also on duty to manage the crisis. The government machinery is fully operational across all districts, including Karachi, with all ministers, chairmen, councilors, and mayors actively involved in the relief efforts.
During a press conference in Karachi, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon emphasized that in times of natural disasters, it is the responsibility of governments to be out in the field rather than sitting back. He highlighted that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and President Asif Ali Zardari issued clear instructions that all party members must be present on the ground. He mentioned that Ms. Faryal Talpur, the leader of the PPP, is personally monitoring the entire situation and has assigned duties to MPs and MNAs across all districts to ensure they remain in the affected areas.
Sharing rainfall data, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon noted that Badin district experienced the highest rainfall in Sindh, with Shaheed Fazil Rahu recording 190 mm, followed by 168 mm in Badin, 164 mm in Matli, 118 mm in Talhar, 101 mm in Hyderabad city, and 96 mm in rural Hyderabad. He expressed concern over the lack of a positive response from HESCO and SEPCO in managing the emergency, stating that drainage is hindered when pumping machines, which run on electricity, cannot operate due to power outages. He assured that he has been in contact with the federal government, and the Chief Minister of Sindh has also issued directives to address the situation.
Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon further highlighted the transformative initiatives led by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, including the recent distribution of solar panels. He emphasized that this initiative marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s history, providing free solar electricity to 200,000 deserving families identified through the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP). This long-term commitment by the PPP is part of a broader vision to implement initiatives that benefit both current and future generations, aligning with the legacy of Shaheed Ms. Benazir Bhutto, who envisioned the Thar Coal project. This project, revived by President Asif Ali Zardari, is expected to revolutionize Pakistan’s energy sector, with Tharparkar coal generating the cheapest electricity in the country.
He also pointed out that the PPP has consistently initiated projects that provide lasting relief to the people, such as the Benazir Income Support Program, which continues to operate despite changes in government. Under Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s vision, houses are being constructed for 2.1 million families across Sindh, providing shelter to those affected by floods. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon expressed confidence that the day is not far when the PPP will form the federal government.
Furthermore, he called on other provinces to follow Sindh’s model by establishing NICVDs, introducing CyberKnife technology, and facilitating free liver and kidney transplants. He assured that Sindh is ready to support these initiatives, which would benefit all Pakistanis and save countless lives. He highlighted the PPP’s commitment to action over promises, citing the introduction of EV buses, pink buses, and the forthcoming launch of the first EV taxi as examples of the government’s forward-looking projects.
Concluding, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon discussed the crackdown on narcotics, announcing the arrest of an NGO involved in drug trafficking. He stressed that drug dealers and users will not be spared, with a particular focus on drug tests in schools and colleges. The government, in collaboration with Sindh Police, Pakistan Rangers, ANF, and Excise Narcotics Control, is determined to eliminate the drug menace. He also mentioned the seizure of a Facebook page used for drug sales and the ongoing scrutiny of NGOs.
In response to a question, he criticized PTI, stating that the party was artificially brought to power in 2018 and has since caused significant damage to the country. He condemned PTI’s leadership for exposing the youth to harmful rhetoric on social media and highlighted the party’s lack of substantial achievements. Addressing another question, he emphasized that MQM is neither an ally nor a partner of the PPP in the federal government.
Lastly, he expressed deep sorrow over the recent events in Balochistan, where innocent people were martyred, and security forces were attacked. He supported the federal government’s decision to take strict action against the terrorists, stating that the incidents in Balochistan constitute serious acts of terrorism that must be addressed.
