In a significant move toward fulfilling his election manifesto, Chairman Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has launched an ambitious solar energy project aimed at providing relief to low-income households across Sindh. The project, part of the 10-point ‘Awami Muashi Muahida’ (People’s Economic Agreement), seeks to distribute solar home systems to 1.6 million underprivileged families in phases, with the first phase already underway.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Chief Minister House, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari emphasized the PPP’s commitment to delivering sustainable solutions to public issues. He underscored that the initiative aligns with his party’s vision of providing affordable electricity to the most vulnerable segments of society. The project, initiated by the Sindh government, will see 200,000 families, eligible under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), receive free solar home systems in two districts during the first phase.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari addressed the criticism his proposal initially faced, noting that the need for affordable electricity for the poor has now gained widespread recognition. He reiterated the PPP’s dedication to extending this initiative to all districts of Sindh and potentially nationwide, should the party gain federal mandate.
Reflecting on his party’s achievements, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari highlighted that the Sindh government, in line with Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s vision, has made significant strides in providing affordable electricity through public-private partnerships, including the Thar Coal project and investments in wind power. He disclosed that three energy parks are currently being developed in Sindh under similar partnerships, further advancing the province’s green energy initiatives.
“Our vision is for a bright Pakistan,” Bilawal Bhutto Zardari declared, emphasizing that providing free 300 units of electricity to lower-income families is both feasible and essential. He criticized the federal electricity system as dysfunctional, urging the federal government to support Sindh’s solar initiative or present a more effective alternative.
The event was attended by key PPP figures, including Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, former Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, PPP Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Provincial Minister for Energy Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, provincial ministers, members of the assembly, and other party leaders.
