Karachi, August 14: The city’s Independence Day celebrations took a tragic turn as over 70 people sustained injuries due to indiscriminate aerial firing, according to rescue sources cited by Presstonight on Wednesday. As revellers took to the streets to celebrate the 77th Independence Day of Pakistan, many resorted to aerial firing at the stroke of midnight, leading to chaos and widespread injuries.
The incidents were reported from various localities across Karachi, reflecting the extent of the dangerous practice. Among the affected areas were Mauripur Road, PIB Colony, Old Golimar, Korangi, Jamshed Quarter, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Lyari, and Malir. Additionally, incidents of aerial firing were also reported in the Korangi Industrial Area, Landhi, Mahmoodabad, Shahrah-e-Noorjahan, and Hydari.
Despite the high number of injuries, no fatalities were reported, offering a small relief amidst the widespread concern over the reckless celebrations. Emergency services were stretched thin as they rushed to transport the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. The nature of injuries ranged from minor wounds to more severe cases, with some victims requiring immediate medical attention.
Authorities have repeatedly warned against the dangers of aerial firing, especially during celebrations. However, the practice continues to be a troubling tradition in some areas, leading to unnecessary injuries and fear among the populace. This year’s Independence Day celebrations in Karachi serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with such actions, and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of laws to prevent future incidents.
The city’s law enforcement agencies are expected to take note of the incidents and intensify efforts to curb this hazardous behavior. As Karachi residents reflect on the events of the night, the hope is that future celebrations will be marked by joy and safety, free from the dangers that marred this year’s festivities.
