Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences in Sindh, has reached a remarkable milestone by performing over 1,000 successful liver transplants.
Additionally, GIMS has achieved first combined kidney and living donor liver transplant, the first living donor liver transplant for an HIV-positive patient, and the first ABO-incompatible liver transplant. The institute has also conducted swap, auxiliary, and pediatric liver transplants.
Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah praised the institute, GIMS currently hosts the largest liver transplant program in the country and is the largest in the world. He highlighted the institute’s public sector status and its commitment to providing free treatment.
Of the 1,000 transplants, patients hailed from various regions, including 460 from Sindh, 347 from Punjab, 141 from Balochistan, 36 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, nine from Kashmir, and four from Afghanistan. Among the international patients, a U.S. national named Julie Neman registered online for a liver transplant at GIMS, drawn by the cost-effective and timely treatment.
During a commemorative ceremony, Chief Minister Shah interacted with patients and praised the institute’s achievements. Dr. Rahim Bux Bhatti, GIMS Director, and his team celebrated the milestone, underscoring the institute’s success since its first liver transplant in April 2016. Initially relying on international surgeons, GIMS now boasts a fully trained in-house team led by Dr. Abdul Wahab Dogar.
With a success rate of 90%, comparable to global standards, GIMS is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and continues to perform various transplants and treatments, solidifying its status as a leading healthcare institution in Asia.
