Sindh CM Directs Use of Drones and E-Tagging to Combat Crime

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to deploy drones for monitoring criminal movements and their hideouts, according to an official statement.

During a law and order meeting on Thursday, CM Shah decided to acquire 4,000 devices for E-tagging repeat street and drug criminals. He emphasized the implementation of geo-tagging and GPS technology to prevent street and drug crimes in hotspot areas of the city.

The provincial police chief was instructed to distribute 14 drones, procured last month, to the police in Sukkur, Ghotki, Kashmore, and Shikarpur districts for monitoring criminal activities and hideouts.

“I know the police, with the coordinated support of Rangers and other law enforcement agencies, have made progress in controlling law & order, including street crime in the city and kidnapping for ransom in the Kutcha area, but we should take advantage of the latest technology in curbing crime,” CM Shah stated. He added that sufficient funds have already been provided to the police for equipment.

CM Shah stressed the importance of not becoming complacent regarding Karachi’s current crime rate, particularly concerning drug control. He expressed concerns that failure to control drugs could result in future generations and society at large becoming increasingly susceptible to drug use, leading to more crime and lawlessness.

The CM was informed that 4,000 devices would be procured for E-tagging repeat criminals, including street offenders and narcotics dealers. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring that police vehicles are equipped with trackers, noting that 3,302 police vehicles currently have this system installed.

The CM was briefed on the first phase of the Karachi Safe City project, which involves the installation of 1,300 cameras. CM Shah has already allocated Rs5.6 billion for this project.

Additionally, CM Shah directed the police to adopt laser-guided fencing technology for border logging. He instructed the IG police to coordinate with the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) to explore and report on this technology.

The use of GPS and related technology was also discussed to effectively monitor and prevent drug-related criminal activities.
